Earlier this week Will Coldwell selected the Museum of Caricature in Warsaw as, “one of the best 10 museums in Europe ... that you’ve never heard of” (18 May). How sad then that the Warsaw mayor’s office has instigated a process to close the museum and incorporate it and its collections within a department at the larger Museum of Warsaw. Although deputy mayor Jaroslaw Jozwiak says a final decision has not yet been made and this does not represent a liquidation of the museum and its collections, there is no doubt that the loss of this recognised small museum will mean less access to its 20,000 drawings and research facilities. Musician Tom Lipinski, son of the founder of the Muzeum Karykatury, is leading a campaign to save the premises that are housed in an old orangery, once part of the 18th-century Prymas Castle, and the Cartoon Museum in London fully supports, and encourages others to help save this small, but vibrant, important outlet for european cartoon art.

The Museum of Caricature in Warsaw is in danger of loosing its identity as an art museum. It was built from scratch by the Polish caricaturist and graphic designer and author Eryk Lipinski with an aim to collect and exhibit caricature, both Polish foreign, contemporary as well as historical. Set up in 1978, it was one of the first independent Caricature Museums in Europe, and its model was followed by other similar institutions in Hannover, Frankfurt, London and many other cities. I visited many fascinating exhibitions there in the past, and my bookshelf with caricature books if full of the Museum's publications, to which I am turning very often in my research. Even if Warsaw History Museum is a wonderful and lively institution which undergoes currently a wholesale refurbishment and reform, I am convinced that the planned incorporation of The Museum of Caricature into the larger Warsaw History Museum would be an act of undermining the premises of caricature as a critical art form, hijacking and turning it a historical record.

Small, focused museums such as Warsaw's Museum of Caricature are essential to the cultural fabric of every city. They are like the craft galleries or restaurants featuring traditional local cuisine which through their very personal character illustrate the wit and fundamental, unique personality of the city. To absorb these precious gems into some cultural department store is an act of destruction which can only detract from a great city and can never be reversed.

I am a british designer and illustrator living in Poalnd, so my knowledge of the subtleties of polish politics is minimal, but my experience tells me that when bureaucracy is opaque it invariably means they have something to hide and, to put it simply, that hidden thing is often money. Whatever the real reasons for the apparently nonsensical decisions of City Hall, I wish you every success in your attempts to help Mrs.Gronkiewicz-Waltz and her friends to see sense.

Popieram protest z Kanady. Gdybym byla w Warszawie, to sama bym poszla porozmawiac z nia. Powodzenia. Trzymam kciuki.

Znam to muzeum – unikat w skali Europy. Kiedyś przeprowadziłam wywiad z Erykiem Lipińskim i wiem, jaką ekwilibrystykę wykonał, by muzeum powstało. W Muzeum Warszawy (gdzie to?
